The Badakhshon Mountains are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List
The Badakhshon Mountains are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. To preserve the unique landscapes, endangered species of flora and fauna, and the development of tourism 20 years ago in the Gorno-Badahshon Autonomous Region the National Park was established.
The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan considering the value of the park with an area of 2.5 million hectares of mountain system suggested to include its territory in the World Heritage List of the UNESCO. This is the largest protected area in Tajikistan and throughout Central Asia.
Many unique kinds of flora and fauna of the park are listed in the Red Book. Pamir Botanical Garden - one of the highest gardens in the world. Here you can see all the 20,000 plants and trees, most of which are considered endangered. Lake Zorkul (it is marked on maps as Victoria) - is the only place on the planet where their offspring displays Indian goose. This unique species within the former USSR nest in the lakes of the Pamir, a huge population that is forming in Zorkul.
The park has a lot of mineral springs and historic sites. The Committee of Youth Affairs, Sports and Tourism under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan from its part will actively promote GBAO as tourism zone and hopes that this region of country will now attract more number of tourists while preserving its originality.
